Wilhelm August Rieder, Watercolour, May 1825

These pages contain a reasonably comprehensive Schubert family tree, containing over 400 names, plus many notes and source information. The tree is in a constant state of growth and development, and we welcome any additions to the tree with supporting documentation, especially if your family tree connects. In the first instance EMail us at info@franschubert.org.uk. We would particularly like to get into contact with other enthusiasts who are researching Schubert's family tree.

The data from which this tree is generated is maintained in a Family Tree Maker database, which is used to produce a GEDCOM file. This GEDCOM file is available to you from SIUK. For details, follow the link. The information contained herein is also available in a word processor document, for those without a genealogy program.

This family tree for Franz Schubert does not claim to present significant amounts of new genealogical material (though there are a few pieces of information which have not, to my knowledge, been published before) - I do not have access to the source materials, nor the linguistic and genealogical skills that would be necessary to perform this type of research across several different countries. Instead it is a pulling together of available information, much of it, as far as I am aware, only available in the German language, and not all available from a single source. The information has come from individuals and various biographical and genealogical books and papers, the inevitable result of which are some differences in stated facts, which are highlighted in notes - in general where sources disagree I have taken the more recent source, except where it seems likely that an error has been made.

The details for the major part of the tree are from an article published for the 150th anniversary of Schubert's death by Schöny. That article is very much centred on the Schubert family, i.e. those with the Schubert surname. Even when obviously known, details of children of daughters of the Schubert family tend not to be given. Another major input has come from the personal family tree of Martha Böhm-Schubert a Schubert genealogy researcher, herself a descendant of Schubert's brother Ferdinand, to whom I am indebted.

We welcome any attempts to join your family tree with this one. However, you should be aware that without documented knowledge of ancestor's names, dates, etc., little progress can be made. We get regular requests from people who believe they may be related to Schubert (usually through his brother Ferdinand, who was especially fertile!). To date none of these have a confirmed link. Schubert was not an uncommon surname. In many cases, we fear, family legends about a link have become thought of as fact, whereas they have no other basis than a shared surname.

GedHTree Homepage

These Family Tree HTML pages are automatically generated from a GEDCOM file by the GedHTree utility program ©1999 by Gary Welker. For details of how to use this program to post your family tree on the web, follow the link.

GedHTree generates a number of standard HTML pages, to enable navigation of the family tree. The tree itself has a visual representation of the ancestors of the 'root' individual, in this case Franz Schubert. A single page shows the root individual and 3 generations, i.e. back to the Greatgrandparents. Arrows allow scrolling to other pages which show more generations in the same form. The tree can be reached from other pages by following the tree icons. tree icon The normal point of entry to a GedHTree site is through a Surname Index which provides links to other pages, and the means to drill down to find individuals listed by surname. This gives brief details of each person, with a further drill down to their 'Family Page'. Family pages can also be reached by clicking on individuals on the tree pages, and the surname pages. Individual entries on a family page may have links to detailed notes, source information or pictures. The Surname Count page lists surnames alphabetically, with a count of individuals with each surname, and the Frequent Surnames page lists the same information in order of the surnames with most individuals.

In addition to the standard GedHTree information, we have added a short bibliography of sources of Schubert genealogical information, and pages which give the modern names of places (many of which have changed), and modern addresses, where known.
