Albi Rosenthal (1914-2004)

Obituary

The distinguished bookseller and colector Albi (Albrecht) Rosenthal died on 3 August this year, aged 89. Although his membership had lapsed recently, Albi showed great interest in both the Schubert Institute (UK) and the International Schubert Institute, and was a founder committee member of SIUK.

He was an accomplished musician, and it is hardly surprising that he should have specialised professionally in music, autograph manuscripts and letters. Of special interest to Schubertians was his purchase in 1958 of the 'Therese Grob' collection of Schubert Song manuscripts on behalf of a wealthy Swiss collector. He also acquired the books and papers left by the Schubert scholar Maurice Brown, which SIUK managed to purchase in 1994 to form the nucleus of the Schubert Institute Research Centre collection in the University of Leeds.
