Institute Members and Officers
The institute has a number of "big name" members, and a
small group of enthusiasts who form the committee who run it. Amongst
the more notable members are:
Notable Members
- President: Alfred Brendel
- Alfred Brendel, who recently celebrated his 65th birthday, is a
world renowned pianist with many recordings of the classical
repertory. He was born in Austria, and is a noted Schubertian, and
Schubert enthusiast, as can be seen from his book: Musical
Thoughts and Afterthoughts.
- Vice-President: Dame Janet Baker
- Janet Baker (Mezzo Soprano) is a famous British Opera and Lieder
singer, now sadly retired. Amongst her many and varied recordings is
the first in the "Complete Lieder" edition by Hyperion,
which won a Gramophone award.
- Vice President: Imogen Cooper
- Another well known pianist, whose works include a series of 6 CDs
released by Ottavo on the 'last 6 years', with virtually the whole
of Schubert's solo piano output of 1823-28.
- Vice-President Graham Johnson
- Graham Johnson, who was born in Zimbabwe, is a specialist
accompanist, following in the footsteps of Gerald Moore, whose
legacy to Graham was his ten volume Schubert edition, full of
pencilled markings. Graham is the accompanist, planner and note
writer for the Hyperion Schubert
Edition. He was awarded the OBE in 1994.
- Vice President: Sir Claus Moser
Vice President (and
committee member): Professor Brian Newbould

|
Brian Newbould was chairman of The Schubert
Institute (UK) from 1994 until his retirement in 2002 from the
position of Professor of Music at the University of Hull and is
arguably the best known of contemporary Schubert Scholars. He is
well known on the lecture tour, and for his pioneering work in
reconstructing the full scores of Schubert's unfinished symphonies,
symphonic fragments and, more recently, other works. Many of these
versions have been performed and broadcast world-wide: The symphonic
reconstructions have been recorded on Phillips by Sir Neville
Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields and on Hyperion
by Charles Mackerras and the SCO. He has recently published 2
Schubertian books Schubert
and the Symphony, and
Schubert the
Music and the man, and has edited collections of
Schubertian articles.

Me, that is. I used to be the editor of our
Journal The
Schubertian, until my travel schedule made continuing
impossible. I also maintain these pages. Unfortunately, I am not a
musician, and have absolutely no claim to fame.
By day I'm
a specialist in information systems for retailers, especially in the
area of merchandise planning, having been a major contributor in the
design of the world's three leading packages, Arthur
from JDA, Merchandise Planner a.k.a. Makoro
(née Plan-it) from i2 Technologies, and
solutions based on the Retail Predictive Application Server
(RPAS) (née Retek Predictive ...) such as TopPlan
and KeyPlan. After being head of IT for a London based
womens fashion retailer, and a stint as an independant consultant, I
now work for Oracle (having been 'bought' for the umpeenth time in
my career recently), with responsibilities for designing products
and base technologies to meet the needs of their big portfolio of
customers.
