The Schubert Institute (UK)The Schubert Institute (UK) (SIUK) is a UK based charity (No. 1028792). SIUK's purpose is to promote and develop appreciation of the music of Franz Schubert and study of and research into his life and works. Membership of the institute currently costs 18 UK pounds per year, with a special rate of 5 pounds for students. Information of joining SIUK is given here. The institute is a non profit making charitable organisation. Its income comes from its members, who pay an annual subscription, and, from time to time, through other donations and legacies. Members can be found in many countries, although the bulk of the membership is in the UK. Members come from the whole spectrum of Schubert lovers, from professional musicians, musicologists, and academics, through gifted amateurs, to enthusiastic listeners. It is run by a small, but dedicated, group of officers and members, and attempts to satisfy its objectives in a number of ways: Journal:First of all, SIUK publishes a journal, The Schubertian, which is issued free to members 4 times a year, and is currently edited by Crawford Howie. This usually contains news and reviews of events, and happenings at the institute, learned or not so learned articles from members, letters to the editor, reviews of books, compact discs or other items of interest to members as well as occasional translations of articles from Schubert Durch Die Brille (the journal of the IFSI). Note that we are happy to publish (either through the journal or on these pages) articles with Schubertian interest from non-members, though we do not pay a fee for such articles. If you have an article you would like us to publish, please EMail us with the details. Schubert Days:The institute organises regular "Schubert Days" at various locations across the UK (most frequently in London, Manchester, Leeds and Hull). These normally include a number of talks or presentations from members, and performances of some Schubert works, followed by discussions. Schubert Institute Research Centre:The Schubert Institute Research Centre has recently been established by the institute in collaboration with the University of Leeds in Yorkshire. For more details, follow the link. Expert Talks:Many members of the institute are recognised experts on Schubert (or, if you prefer, many experts on Schubert are members of the institute). The SIUK often provides 'experts' to give talks at concerts and other occasions. If you have a need for an expert speaker, EMail us, and we will put you in contact with the institute secretary to see if we can help. Events organised by third parties are regularly 'in association with' SIUK. Web Pages:Not to mention these pages... |
