Schubert Databases

SIUK is able to provide, for a modest fee, a number of useful databases about Schubert. These include a complete list of his works in Excel format, a collection of quotes, and the filmography and discographies of Winterreise, Die schöne Müllerin and Schwanengesang and a bibliography in Access and/or Excel formats, and the Schubert Family tree as a text (Word) document and/or GEDCOM file. Further information from info@franzschubert.org.uk.

The databases may either be EMailed to you (some are quite large, and may take quite a while to download), or mailed on a CD ROM.

The databases are supplied on an 'as-is' basis for personal use only. The copyright of the databases remains with their authors. No part of the databases may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any means, without the written consent of the relevant copyright holder. Such written consent, if granted, may be obtained through the institute at info@FranzSchubert.org.uk. The Schubert Institute (UK), are not responsible for the effect of any errors or omissions.

The Price for any single database supplied by EMail is £5. If you want 2 or more databases, order them all by EMail for £10. Add £2 to have the database(s) posted to you on a CD ROM. Payment is required in advance. You may pay directly by credit card, using the shopping cart buttons below, or post us the payment (see the SIUK Items For Sale page for details). Note that SIUK is charged a service fee for each transaction, so if you intend to make multiple purchases, please add all the items to the shopping cart, and pay for them in one transaction, so more of your payment is retained by SIUK to further the cause of Franz Schubert. To purchase databases, click the appropriate 'add to cart button'.

Filmography:
The details for the filmography page is maintained in an Access database, with the HTML generated semi-automatically. The Access database is very simple, and contains just a single table with the columns Type (e.g. Film, Short, etc); Title, Date, Country, Director, Music, AKA and Notes.

The database can be provided either as the Access database itself, or as a dump of the table into Excel format.

Discographies:
The details for the discography pages are maintained in an Access database, with the HTML generated semi-automatically. The Access database is reasonably straightforward. It contains separate tables for performances of Die schöne Müllerin, Winterreise and Schwanengesang, together with 'lookup' tables for singer, accompanist, voice, instrument and the meaning of notes.

Each song cycle table has columns of Singer, Accompanist, Year, Instrument, Language, Amazon reference nos, Label/Medium notes and Notes, plus an appropriate number of columns for each track for track timings. The HTML is generated semi-automatically from an 'extended' version of these tables, with lookups to the other tables, and the calculation of total timings.

The database can be provided either as the Access database itself, or as a dump of the three extended song cycle tables table into Excel format.

Bibliography:
The details for the bibliography pages are maintained in an Access database, with the HTML generated semi-automatically. This derives from the stock ledger database that I originally built to aid the generation of book descriptions for HTML pages and printed catalogues for Half Time Scores. At the time of writing (February 2002) the entries on the database are just for those books that I own, or that have passed through Half Time Scores. That is, however, well over 250 books and about 400 editions (plus a few magazines), and was used as the source of the bibliography on these pages. I intend to expand the content of the database to include other books from the Kahl, Hilmar and Rast bibliographies.

The Access database is straightforward. It contains separate tables for general details about books and for editions of books. The general details table has columns for the author, title, long and short descriptions and a bibliography section. The editions table has columns for ISBN number, Kahl and Hilmar references, the description of the edition (page count, illustrations, etc), publisher and date, a description of the edition and whether it is harback or paperback. There is a query that joins the two tables together to get extended information about each edition.

The database can be provided either as the Access database itself, or as a dump of the extended edition table table into Excel format.

Family Tree:
The Schubert family tree is maintained in Family Tree Maker. There is a standard interchange format (GEDCOM) for transferring family tree data from one system to another, and that will be the natural form for providing the family tree data. However, if you require the database in Family Tree Maker format, that is also possible.

We also have a Word document which provides a more readable form of the tree, though this may not always be fully up to date to changes or additions in the tree.

Schubert Works Database:
The source of the Schubert works listings is an Excel spreadsheet. The HTML, which changes infrequently (whatever the Musical World might think, it has been quite a while since Schubert wrote any new works !), was hand crafted.

Schubert Quotes Database:
The details for the quotes pages are maintained in an Access database, with the HTML generated semi-automatically. The Access database is very simple, and contains a quotes table with the columns Name, Quote, Source, Subject (appearance, character, ability as composer, etc), Category (i.e. person quoting: friend, composer, critic, etc), and Time, with lookup tables to explain the name, subject, etc.

The database can be provided either as the Access database itself, or as a dump of the table into Excel format.
