Schubert's Style and Idiom & Symposia

Author: Gerald Abraham (ed) Title: Schubert; a Symposium
Desc: Lindsay Drummond, London; 1946. 257pp, plus 42 pages of appendices and 44 pages of Musical examples.
Hilmar # 2
Notes: A collection of chapters or essays by a variety of writers, edited by Abraham. Published in America as The Music of Schubert. There is a very short biography by Otto Erich Deutsch, then chapters on the different types of music; orchestral, chamber, piano, songs, stage and choral, with a closing essay on the Schubert idiom. The chapters tend to be pure musical criticism and analysis, with few biographical details. Sometimes, the separate writers disagree; the chamber chapter dismisses all his piano writing, just before the next chapter praises it. 257 pages with a good (but dated) biography, lots of musical examples and a list of works.

Author: Aderhold, Dürr, Litschauer (eds) Title: Franz Schubert Jahre der Krise 1818 - 1823
Desc: Bärenreiter, Kassel, 1985. ISBN 3-7618-0758-9. 144pp, illustrated, with music examples. (in German)

Desc: Cambridge University Press, 1982. ISBN 0-521-22606-6. 355pp plus index, illustrated.
Articles seperately listed in Hilmar, volume listed as # 85a.
Notes: A collection of essays, generally excellent, from a variety of authors, often quite technical and with general themes of the chronology of works and Schubert's style. Includes the fascinating and important essay by Winter on paper studies. Also has the first publication of a sketch of Schubert making music with Vogl and Josephine Fröhlich by Waldmüller. Over 350 pages, with illustrations and lots of music examples.

Author: Leo Black Title: Franz Schubert: Music and Belief
Desc: Boydell Press, Woodbridge, Suffolk, and Rochester, New York; 2003. 209pp, many music examples, recordings, bibliography, index.
Not in Hilmar
Notes: A rather rambling book that attempts to redress the balance of Schubert being represented as a difficult man in difficult times. Concentrates on works, such as masses and religious songs, where Schubert's beliefs are clearly expressed, and then examines instrumental masterpieces.

Author: Maurice Brown Title: Schubert Variations
Desc: Macmillan, London; 1954. 95pp plus appendix, indexes.Musical Examples.
Hilmar# 386
Notes: Brown's first book, a short (100 pages) discussion of Schubert's 'theme and variations' works, which number 16 pieces or movements of larger works. A couple of chapters on his style, then individual critical analysis on each of the works, broken down to 4 phases - The early experimental years, the song variations (including the trout quintet and the death and the maiden quartet), Maturity, and Decline. No pictures, but musical examples in plenty.

Author: Hans Gál Title: Schubert and the Essence of Melody
Desc: Gollancz, London; 1974. 190pp, musical examples, chronology, bibliography, indexes.
Hilmar # 1198
Notes: A rather rambling and unstructured work, somewhat biographical, somewhat analytical, which invites rereading. Some of the biographical details seem very out of date. Translated from the German Franz Schubert oder der Melodie. Also translated into Hungarian.

Author: Christopher Gibbs (ed) Title: The Cambridge Companion to Schubert
Desc: Cambridge University Press; 1997. 340pp including copious notes and indexes. Many musical examples.
Hilmar # 1254
Notes: An interesting collection of articles, from well known Schubertians. In three sections, Musical political and cultural contexts; Musical style and Genre; Reception. An excellent addition to the field, though overpriced in hardback, the paperback being much more reasonable.

Author: Ludwig Kusche Title: Franz Schubert Dichtung und Wahrheit
Desc: Süddeutscher, Munich, 1962. 157pp. (in German)
Hilmar # 2139
Notes: Series of Short articles on Schubert, in German

Author: Brian Newbould (Ed) Title: Schubert Studies
Desc: Ashgate, Aldershot, 1998. ISBN 1-85928-253-9. 277pp, illustrated, many musical examples.
Articles listed seperately in Hilmar, whole volume as 2600a.
Notes: A collection of 11 varied essays on Schubert by renowned Schubert scholars and performers. I found the essays to be generally very strong and interesting, especially Newbould on the manuscript of the 9th Symphony, and Steblin on Schubert's relationships with women. There is also a welcome, though rather bitty, essay by András Schiff on interpretation and performance of the sonatas. The book is very expensive though, notwithstanding 'a computer virus' that 'corrupted some of the music examples', necessitating a rather embarrassing Errata slip.
