Schubert Orchestral, Chamber and other Works

Author: A Brent Smith Title: Schubert The Symphonies and Schubert Quartet in D minor and Octet
Desc: Oxford University Press, London; 1926 and 1927. 48pp and 55pp. Many musical examples.
Kahl # 1848.
Notes: 2 short (about 50 pages each) critical essays on the 8th and 9th symphonies, and the famous chamber works. Amongst the earliest published criticisms of Schubert works.

Author: Maurice JE Brown Title: Schubert Symphonies
Desc: BBC Publications, London, 1970. 64pp, many musical examples.
Hilmar # 424
Notes: A short (64 pages) critical analysis of the Schubert symphonies. A straightforward guide, slightly out of date as regards the 10th symphony, the sketches of which were at this time (1970) still thought to date from 1818. Various reprints from other publishers including the University of Washington, Seattle.

Author: Martin Chusid (ed) Title: Schubert Symphony in B minor ("Unfinished")
Desc: Norton, New York; 1968. 132pp, inc bibliography.
Hilmar # 566
Notes: From the Norton Critical Scores series, the score of the Unfinished, with the full score of the scherzo fragment, and the piano sketches. Has essays on the historical background and analysis. Also contains long quotes from other famous articles, including Dvorák's on Schubert's Music, and Deutsch on the Unfinished. Revised in 1971 to allow for the recently discovered fragment of the scherzo.

Author: Alexander Dean Title: Rosamunde
Desc: Silver, Burdett, New York, 1928. 170pp, colour illustrations, music score. Decorative boards.
Not in Kahl
Notes: Reconstruction of Rosamunde with 2 act libretto, piano score, costume and staging designs and notes. Despite references to 'professional terms', etc., it seems unlikely that this was ever seriously intended for other than amateur performance. The reconstruction is approximate at best, and features Blossom Time like interpolations of 'bit hits' such as Heidenröslein and Ave Maria. .

Author: Carolyn Maxwell (ed) Title: Schubert Solo Piano Literature
Desc: Maxwell Musical Evaluation, Boulder, Boulder; 1986. 348pp, many incipits.
Hilmar # 2386a
Notes: A sort of annotated thematic catalogue for the piano works only, aimed at teachers, students and performers. Incipit and comments and performance recommendations on all the solo works, including each of the hundreds of dances. Each is graded for difficulty.

Author: [K] Elizabeth Norman McKay Title: Schubert's Music for the Theatre
Desc: Hans Schneider, Tutzing; 1991. ISBN 3 7952 0664 2. 412pp, musical examples.
Hilmar # 2420
Notes: A book published by the Internationales Franz Schubert Institut, the definitive work on Schubert's works for the theatre. This has been a particular specialisation by Elizabeth (one of the founders of the SIUK) since her thesis on the subject. Over 400 pages with lots of musical examples, but no illustrations. Has a decent bibliography and a list of performances and recordings, most of which are not available on CD, but only on old records. Has useful introductory chapters, and detailed analyses of each of the works.

Author: Brian Newbould Title: Franz Schubert Symphony No 7 in E (D729). Realisation
Desc: University of Hull Press, Hull, 1992. ISBN 0 85958 471 2. 157pp, plus 8 pages of preface and 5 plates.
Hilmar # 2589
Notes: Brian Newbould's realisation, in full score, of Schubert's 7th Symphony, a work fully sketched structurally, but not fully written out. The first 110 bars are complete, but over 900 bars have just a single line of music. Rather disappointingly, the score does not indicated what is pure Schubert and what is Newbould, which would have "entailed more cumbersome and expensive processes than accorded with the purposes of this edition"..

Author: [K] Brian Newbould Title: Schubert and the Symphony: A new perspective
Desc: Toccata Press, Surbiton, 1992.ISBN 0-907689-26-4. 417pp, including 4 appendices, index and comprehensive bibliography. Illustrated, many musical examples.
Hilmar # 2590
Notes: A definitive work on Schubert symphonies, by the chairman of the SIUK, and a Schubert scholar renowned for his completions of the Symphonies. Very readable, though a little heavy going in places if you don't know your music theory.

Author: Ernest Porter Title: Schubert's Piano Works
Desc: Dennis Dobson, London; 1980. 158pp, musical examples, appendices and index.
Hilmar # 2829
Notes: I bought this new quite recently, though whether it is still in print, or that was just a few leftovers, I don't know. A fairly thorough analysis of the piano music, both solo and duet, including chapters on Harmony and Modulation and Melody, Rhythm and Form. Not too technical.

A short biography, with details of the works, a few pictures (including one contemporary one I'd never seen before) and lots of music quotes. Also has performing hints.
