Schubert Bibliography

Introduction

This bibliography is gleaned from the bibliography sections of various Schubert reference works that I have access to, two key bibliographical works (by Kahl and from Schubert durch die Brille) and from collections, being especially influenced by my own collection since I want to be able to comment on the books, and not just list them. In general, I'm only including books - though there are many important essays in various other sources which I'm beginning to document, so I may get around to posting the key ones here in the magazines and journals section. The most comprehensive reasonably modern bibliography that I have seen is in the bibliography section of the New Grove Schubert. There is a reasonably comprehensive (though much older) bibliography in the biographical book by Flower. The real enthusiast will find abstract indices in their local library useful, and Schubert durch die Brille, the journal of the now defunct IFSI, publishes lists of new publications from time to time. However, the two most important published bibliographies (Dr. Nicholas Rast, a Schubert scholar and collector, has what is perhaps a more comprehensive bibliography, but that is unpublished) are by Kahl, (1938) and Hilmar & Bodendorf in Brille (2000). Bibliography entries quote Kahl and/or Hilmar reference numbers as appropriate. Note that Kahl numbers alphabetically by year, whereas Hilmar numbers chronologically by author.

I've seen (indeed own) most, but not all of these books, and I'm actively searching for a few of them. There has recently been a bit of an explosion of second hand book suppliers with catalogues posted, in one form or another, on the web, which makes finding books much easier than it used to be!. The most useful dedicated site for the Schubert collector is my little Schubertiana business, Half Time Scores, which will usually have 100 or so Schubert books available.

Where both English and other language versions of books exist, I will usually only quote the English, even where this is not the first edition, though where it is not available in English, I will quote the language. Note that, of course, the serious scholar should always read the sources in the original language, as things tend to get somewhat distorted in translation. I've deliberately tried to mention the key sources (i.e. those that everyone else quotes) even when I do not know them. I've put in a small entry for all the books I have, even if they are not 'key' (and even if I have not read them, which is often the case with minor books in German, which I only read very slowly). Books I regard as key are marked thus: [K]. Those which I don't own, and thus have my comments based on a more cursory examination (though I have sometimes read them), are marked '***'.

The information used to generate these HTML pages is maintained in an access database, which is available to you from SIUK, (also available as an Excel spreadsheet) so you may do your own analyses. For details, follow the link.

My own collection has now reached a significant size, and is already overflowing a large dedicated bookcase. I've also got a few works in German that I'm in the (slow) process of translating, so most of the write ups of German works are fairly vague. It's pretty much the case now that I will buy any book with 'Schubert' in the title!, so if you know of any... There are many, many books out there which you never see quoted in the standard bibliographies, but which, nevertheless, do afford some interest or amusement!

The bibliography lists several hundreds of books, and so has had to be broken down into a number of subpages. I've categorised books as sensibly and consistently as possible, but there are always a few books that don't really fit anywhere, or fit in more than one place. I have therefore built a single 'cross index' page that lists all books alphabetically by Author and Title, and can be used as an entry point to the subpages. The sections in the bibliography can be accessed from the drop-down menu, or the menu bar on the left hand side of the pages. The classification of the sections is as follows:
