Background

Introduction

I've categorised as 'background information books' those books which are of a factual nature about Schubert, or background to him, but which are not intended to be complete biographies. Also includes a section of the 10th Deutsches Sängerbundesfest in Vienna 1928.

Notes: Translated from the original French language book La vie Quotidienne a Vienne a l'Epoch de Mozart et de Schubert (and also translated into other languages, such as Spanish). Some useful background information, but very little on Schubert (or Mozart, come to that). Disappointing.

Hilmar #405.
Notes: As implied by the title, this is a collection of some 14 essays across over 300 pages. The essays are in 3 groups; The Music, The Composer and Manuscripts and Editions. Consistently interesting essays, including several which are rather technical, across a wide range of Schubertian subjects. There are fascinating documents about this book in the SIRC.

Desc: Amalthea, Zurich, Leipzig, Vienna, 1919. 198pp, many illustrations. In German.
Kahl # 1452.
Notes: A book, as the title says, about Musical 'sites' in Vienna. Largely rewritten with completely different (more 'people oriented') pictures in later editions (of which there are several - the 1947 edition is over 400 pages). Has a general introductory chapter, and then chapters on Gluck, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert.

Desc: Böhlau, Vienna, 1998. 490pp, many illustrations, with 16 pages of full colour plates. Usual appendices.
Hilmar # 3320
Notes: Drawings and transcription of papers from the Unsinnsgesellschaft. The Unsinnsgesellschaft was a society whose members included Franz Schubert and member of his circle such as Josef and Leopold Kupelwieser and Ludwig Kraißl. As always with Steblin, a meticulously researched work with many new documents and pictures (14 by Leopold Kupelwieser) discovered in her researches. Two of these contemporary pictures show Schubert. Handsomely produced.

10th Deutsches Sängerbundesfest

Author: Max Andre Title: Zehntes Deutsches Sängerbundesfest Wien 1928.
Desc: Dörschel & v. Witzleben, Hannover, 1928. 32pp, many photographs. In German
Not in Kahl
Notes: Another memoir of the 10th Deutsches Sängerbundesfest in Vienna 1928, published in Hannover. Has a poem by Max Andre, but no other background information, just pictures. The large format is largely wasted, as only a single picture is given full size. Otherwise we have pictures similar to, or the same as, those in the Harbauer and Lechner books, but four per page. Much harder to find than the other Sängerbundesfest memoirs.

Author: Prof. Emil Fladt Title: Erinnerungen an das 10. Deutsche Sängerbundesfest Wien 1928
Desc: Stadion, Stuttgart, 1928. 96pp with many photographs. In German
Not in Kahl
Notes: Memoir of the 10th Deutsches Sängerbundesfest in Vienna 1928. Produced as a souvenir for the participants, but published in Stuttgart, not Vienna. Some useful background information and pictures, including a 15" long fold-out paroramic 'fish eye' view of the first performance at a full Sängerhalle. Similar to, but smaller than, and harder to find than the Harbauer and Lechner books.

Author: Karl Harbauer Title: 10. Deutsches Sängerbundesfest Wien 1928.
Desc: Schneider, Vienna, 1928. 196pp, many illustrations, index. In German
Not in Kahl
Notes: Memoir of the 10th Deutsches Sängerbundesfest in Vienna 1928. Produced as a souvenir for the participants (and it is not uncommon to find copies with pictures of participating choirs inlaid), so plenty of pictures from the parade, but also includes interesting pictures of the construction of the Sängerhalle, etc., and background material on the organisation of the Sängerbundesfest.

Author: Rudolf Holzer (Schriftleitung) Title: Festblatter für das 10. Deutsche Sängerbundesfest Wien 1928
Desc: 10. Deutsche Sängerbundesfest, Vienna, 1927-8. 336 pp in 12 booklets. Many illustrations and facsimiles, music examples. In German
Articles listed sperately in Kahl
Notes: Festival booklets for the 10th Deutsches Sängerbundesfest in Vienna. There were 12 booklets, published over the period from August 1927 to December 1928. They contain adverts, information about the Sängerbundesfest and it's organizers, various articles on song composers, including Schubert, Bruckner, Beethoven, Wolf, and other articles. Before the event many of the articles are about Austria, Vienna and the towns and villages around it. After the event there are pictures, reports etc. Includes a number of important articles by Otto Erich Deutsch, and others, including facsimiles. The first Folge has the first publication of Der 13. Psalm (D663), the third the first publication of Widerhall (D428), Erinnerungen (D424) and Andenken (D423), all in facsimile. First editions of Ländler (D354/4 and D355) are in the 9th Folge (May 1928). Can be found as individual booklets, or a bound set of all 12. The May 1928 edition (Folge 9) is packed with Schubert articles.

Author: Lechner (publisher) Title: 10. Deutsches Sängerbundesfest Wien 1928.
Desc: Lechner, Vienna, 1928. 240 pages of photographs, plus 30 pages of introduction. In German
Not in Kahl
Notes: Memoir of the 10th Deutsches Sängerbundesfest in Vienna 1928. Produced as a souvenir for the participants . More, and larger pictures than the equally common Harbauer book, though less background information.

Author: Lechner (publisher) Title: 10. Deutsches Sängerbundesfest Wien 1928. Festführer.
Desc: Lechner, Vienna, 1928. XII + 232pp including many adverts, plus 16 pages of photographs. In German
Not in Kahl
Notes: Introductory handbook for the 10th Deutsches Sängerbundesfest in Vienna 1928. Presumably given to, or bought by all participants. Lots of adverts, a few pictures of notable persons, Schubert's birthhouse, etc. Background information on Vienna. Details of performances, with places, times, groups and works to be sung.
