1 Strolling Singers
Duet :
Oh! the May-time
Is a gay time,
When we frolic all the night and day-time,
As we stroll up and we stroll down,
Through the ways of old Vienna town!

Lu-li-oh ! Lu-li-oh ! Lu-lu-li-oh ! etc.

As you pass round
Have a glass round,
With your other hand you hold a lass round —
Then a king would give his gold crown
For a day in old Vienna town !

Lu-li-oh ! Lu-li-oh ! Lu-lu-li-oh ! etc.

Valse sentimentale, D779/5
2 Lili, Tilli, Willi
Terzett: Just a little Ring
(All). Tilli, and Willi, and Lili Veit,
Trim and tight, brisk and bright,
Why have we come in the beautiful weather,
Three all together
Here to-night ?
(Tilli.) Say, is my sweetheart here ?
Here or near ?
Say, is my sweetheart here ?
(Lili). Say, is her sweetheart here ?
(Willi). Oh dear, is my sweetheart here ?
Here or near ?
(Lili). Well, if you should meet the men who love you,
I must watch above you here.
(Tilli and Willi). You must watch above us here !

(Lili). Though it’s a duty far from pleasant,
I am present,
As duenna !
You mustn’t give the slightest handle
For a scandal
In Vienna !
(Tilli and Willi). Make no scandal In Vienna !

(Lili). Only a look that’s soft and shy,
cast from a modest maiden’s eye —
Winking at strangers
Leads you into fearful dangers !
(Tilli and Willi). Soft and shy,
A maiden's eye !
Don't look at strangers,
That is full of dangers !

(All). Men are bold as we know well —
Give an inch, they take an ell !
(Lili). Take care, take care !
Or you'll land you don't know where !
(Tilli and Willi). Ah !

(Lili). You be cold
Till you hold
Just a little ring of gold !
That is what the men must bring
Just this thing —
Wedding ring !
(Tilli and Willi). Seem cold
You'll hold
That ring of gold.

(Lili). That is just what they'll bring —
(Tilli). Just this thing —
Wedding ring —
(Willi). Wedding ring !

(All). Tilli, and Willi, and Lili Veit,
Trim and tight, brisk and bright,
Why have we come in the beautiful weather ?
Three all together, Here to-night !

Well, yes — we must confess, it's just
Because {their | our} hearts are burning,
With sentimental yearning.
And {they’re | we’re } full fathom five above
{Their | Our} little heads in love !
And soon a wedding there may be,
At the Sign of the Maidens Three !

Ballet from Rosamunde, D797/9
3 Vogl, Schwind, Kappel, Schober
Quartet : Four Jolly Brothers
(Vogl, Schwind, Kappel). We're three jolly, jolly brothers,
With one very merry song,
Each sticking to the others
For all your life long !
All adore the three divine !
(Schwind). Of song, woman, and wine !
(Vogl, Schwind, Kappel). Yes, song, woman and wine !
We're three jolly, jolly brothers !
Ha, ha !

(Kappel). Golden Apollo
We say that we follow:
(Vogl, Schwind, Kappel). We own, between us,
It's Bacchus and Venus
And life gaily passes,
With glasses and lasses !
D899/4 Impromptu no. 4 in A flat
(Schober). We're four jolly, jolly brothers,
For here is a brother more,
I and the others,
Make one, two, three, four !
(All). All are artists, famous and fine
In verses — or song —
In colour — or line !
But when we resign
The Art for the wine
We're four jolly, jolly brothers —
Ha, ha !

(Kappel). So when Apollo
Is too hard to follow,
(All). Who can attack us
For turning to Bacchus ?
With bumpers before us,
We echo the chorus,
We're four very merry brothers,
We're four jolly, jolly,
Four jolly, jolly boys !

D899/4 Impromptu no. 4 in A flat
4 Schubert, Schober, Vogl, Schwind, Kappel
Quintet : Hark, Hark ! The Lark
(Schubert). Hark, hark, the lark at Heaven's gate sings,
And Phoebus 'gins arise,
His steeds to water at those springs
On chalic'd flowers that lies;
On chalic'd flowers that lies !
And winking Mary-buds begin
To ope their golden eyes —
With everything that pretty bin,
My lady sweet, arise !
With everything that pretty bin,
My lady sweet, arise !
(All) Arise, arise !
My lady sweet, arise !
Arise, arise,
My lady sweet, arise !

(Schober and others). Look, look, the cook has done his best
We bring the supper in;
Behold the sausage swell his breast
And almost burst his skin —
He laughs to burst his skin !
The tender veal, a youth in love,
The ham, his blushing bride,
Would win the hearts of gods above,
When nestling side by side !
And mark the cake, a fairy dream,
All almonds drowned in cream.
And cheese — and cheese —
Just smell it, if you please !
(All). And beer and wine —
(Schubert). A banquet all divine !

Ständchen, D889
5 Schubert, Schober, Vogl, Schwind, Kappel
Quintet: Under the Lilac Bough
(Schubert). Underneath the lilac bough,
What a joy to sit,
While across the blossoms now,
Fragrant breezes flit!
Heart of mine, the May is here
Fairy gifts to bring —
Speak your wish, and have no fear,
Tell the lavish Spring !
(Vogl). I ask for a wine of gold,
As strong as the world and as old !
(Schwind). I wish for a pair of wings,
To soar like the lark that sings !
(Kappel). And I would be a Raphael —
He painted pictures rather well !
(Schober). I wish for friends as good as you
To keep my whole life through !
(Schubert). The best of all you forget,
My wish is more wonderful yet !
(Others). What’s that ? What’s that ?
Piano Sonata in D, D850, 4th Movement (Rondo)
(Schubert). I ask the Spring, blossom-laden,
To show me my maiden,
The love that I long for and look for to-day —
And she will wear on her bosom
The fair lilac blossom,
My fairest, my rarest,
My maid of the May !
(Others). I ask the Spring, blossom-laden,
To show me my maiden,
The love that I long for and look for to-day —
(Schubert). And she will wear on her bosom
The fair lilac blossom,
(All). My fairest, my rarest, My maid of the May !
D365/2, Trauerwalzer
(Schubert). Underneath the lilac bloom,
What delight to stay,
While across the scented gloom
Vagrant breezes stray!
When the world is like a rose,
Like a rose in bud,
All the Maytime gladness glows
Through a lover’s blood.
(Vogl). Yes, I was in love with two —
I loved them, but neither was true.
(Schwind). I wish an Italian came,
With kisses and eyes of flame
(Kappel). I want a real Vienna girl,
With laughing eyes and teeth of pearl.
(Schober). I’ll be a Sultan in the East
With fifty wives at least.
(Schubert). Ah, laugh and jest as you will,
But love is lord of us still.
(Others). It’s love; it’s love !
Piano Sonata in D, D850, 4th Movement (Rondo)
(Schubert). I ask the Spring, blossom-laden,
To show me my maiden,
The love that I long for and look for to-day —
And she will wear on her bosom
The fair lilac blossom,
My fairest, my rarest,
My maid of the May !
(Others). I ask the Spring, blossom-laden,
To show me my maiden,
The love that I long for and look for to-day —
(Schubert). And she will wear on her bosom
The fair lilac blossom,
(All). My fairest, my rarest, My maid of the May !

D365/2, Trauerwalzer
6 Lili, Schubert
Duet: The Golden Song
(Lili). I’m excited, so delighted —
I have not the words to say !
(Schubert). Ah, my pleasure none could measure,
If I please you any way !
(Lili). Oh, you know why it’s so —
It’s your songs of long ago !
(Schubert). Yes — my songs — ah, I see —
I had thought it was for me !
Die Forelle, D550
(Lili). For what is so sweet as a golden song
That rings in your heart for a whole life long ?
(Schubert). A music of laughter, a sigh of love,
That makes us like angels in Heav’n above !
(Lili). A kiss in the rhyme of it, Joy in the chime of it,
Hearts to the time of it, Beating strong !
(Both). A kiss in the rhyme of it, Joy in the chime of it,
Hearts to the time of it, Beating strong !
Deutscher Tanze, D783/7
(Schubert). We may capture once the rapture —
Then the joy has passed us by.
(Lili). Such a gladness is like madness,
Makes you want to laugh and cry !
(Schubert). Ever young, when they’re sung,
Are the songs of long ago —
(Lili). Yes the songs — I agree —
I had thought he spoke of me !
Die Forelle, D550
(Schubert). For what is so sweet as a golden song
That rings in your heart for a whole life long ?
(Lili). A music of laughter, a sigh of love,
That makes us like angels in Heav’n above !
(Schubert). A kiss in the rhyme of it, Joy in the chime of it,
Hearts to the time of it, Beating strong !
(Both). A kiss in the rhyme of it, Joy in the chime of it,
Hearts to the time of it, Beating strong !

(All). Prosit ! Prosit ! Prosit ! Prosit ! ??
(Schubert). Underneath the lilac bloom,
(All). What delight to stay,
(Schubert). All across the scented gloom
(All). Vagrant breezes stray!
(Schubert, Schober, Girls). Heart of mine, the May is here —
Fairy gifts to bring !
(Schubert). Speak your wish and have no fear
(All). Tell the lavish Spring.
Piano Sonata in D, D850, 4th Movement (Rondo)
(All). I ask the Spring, blossom-laden,
To show {a fond | me my} maiden,
The love that I long for and look for to-day —
And {if I wear | if she wears } on her bosom
The fair lilac blossom,
{He’ll meet me | I’ll meet her}, and greet {me | her}
{His | My} maid of the May !
D365/2, Trauerwalzer
(Veit). Ah, well — it’s so — my girls will wed, I see —
We’re left alone at the Sign of the Maidens Three !
(Lili). Oh, father, come. You will still have me !
And though I’m one, I’ll reckon as three.
(Veit). But someone will wed the last of mine
And then I must take down the sign.
Not known
(Lili). There’s a house that stands in the town somewhere,
And three little maidens are there,
One has golden hair, one has black, one brown,
The merriest girls in the town !
When the dawn is white in skies of blue,
And pigeons are starting to coo,
You can hear a twitter through the blind,
The three little girls are behind.
(Others). Yes, the three little girls are behind !
(Lili). Yes, the three little girls are behind !
There’s Tilli and Willi and Lili !
Not known
(Lili). We are a trio than none will repeat;
We’re loved to distraction by all that we meet;
Cupid is hid in our eyes and our curls,
He’s at the sign of the Three Little Girls !
(Others). Oh, {we | they} are a trio than none will repeat;
{We’re | They’re} loved to distraction by all that {we | they} meet;
(Lili). Cupid is hid in our eyes and our curls,
He’s at the sign of the Three Little Girls !
(Others). Love lurks in the curls.
Of the Three Little Girls !
Wanderer Fantasy D760, Presto
(Lili). Number one is Tilli, all heart they say,
Her heart is what gave her away.
Number two is Willi, a sort of saint,
Now she too has caught the complaint !
But the other daughter, she’s the best,
For love never troubles her rest !
And she knows the Fates will send her yet
The very best man they can get !
(Others). Yes, the very best man they can get !
(Lili). Yes, the very best man they can get !
Then Lili will also be Silly !
Not known
(Veit). Now it’s getting dark, and so
We ought to make a start.
Say good-night and part !
Late is the hour, we’ve a long way to go —
Still, there’s a moon, so the road we shall know !
(Schober). Let us escort you home to-night —
Never fear, we are here !
(All). March, keeping step, left, right, left, right —
There’s nothing then to fear !
(Binder). May I offer my protection ?
Surely there is no objection ?
(Braun). As you took my heart already,
Take my arm to hold you steady !
(Tilli and Willi). Though we’re not married, we mean to be soon,
And so we can walk with you under the moon.
(Veit) Start away ! Or we won’t be home before break of day !
Military March, D733/3
(Lili). Oh! what is so sweet as a golden song
That rings in your heart for a whole life long ?
A music of laughter, a sigh of love,
That makes us like angels in Heav’n above !
(Lili, Schubert). A kiss in the rhyme of it, Joy in the chime of it,
Hearts to the time of it, Beating strong !
A kiss in the rhyme of it, Joy in the chime of it,
Hearts to the time of it, Beating strong !
Deutscher Tanze, D783/7
2nd Act
8   Prelude
8a Schober
Solo: I am singing I your lover
I am singing, I, your lover,
Calling through the night.
Where the arching branches’ cover
Hides me from your sight.
Over us the moonbeams hover,
All is shadow here —
Dearest, do not fear !

Now the Nightingales are trilling,
Ah, to you they pray !
Theirs are love songs far more thrilling,
Words I dare not say !
They can feel the love I sing you,
All its joy and pain —
Hear the pleading song we bring you,
Answer us again !
Ständchen, D957/4 (Leise flehen meiner Lieder)
9   Dance of bridesmaids and Children
10 Schubert
Solo: Vision Song
Voices come thronging
To sing in my ears,
Tender with longing,
Or trembling with tears ;
Like ghosts of the night
They call in their flight,
And each is a song
That I hear as I write.

Dream enthralling
Music softly calling ;
Golden gladness,
Silver sadness,
Give me song
And make my life divine !
Weigenlied, D498
My song may be laden
With gladness of birds,
Love of a maiden,
Her kisses and words ;
The joy and the pain
I long for in vain.
I am but an echo
That answers again !

Dream enthralling
Music softly calling ;
Golden gladness,
Silver sadness,
Give me song
And make my life divine !
Weigenlied, D498
11 Lili, Tilli, Willi, Schober, Binder, Braun
Sextet:
(All). When skies are blue,
When pigeons coo,
That is the right time to woo !
For love’s aglow
When blossoms blow,
As ev’ry lover must know.
Then maidens’ eyes
Are blue as skies,
And lovers murmur in sighs —
"I love you, you love me !
And so it ever shall be !"
Deutscher D783/2
(Men). With love that is volcanic
Our hearts are aflame.
(Girls). Oh dear ! We’re in a panic
We’re so sorry we came !
(Men). You won’t escape us longer,
It’s useless to pray !
(Girls). Then, since you are the stronger
We’ll run right away !
Valse noble, D969/9
(Men). Oh no — oh no, stay here with us do.
(Girls). Oh no — oh no, we’re quite done with you.
(Men). Forgive us and stay, we pray !
(Girls). Now it’s understood,
That you will all be good.

(Schober). You’re a perfect treasure —
(Lili). Thank you, sir !
(Binder). May I have the pleasure —
(Tilli). Thank you, sir !
(Braun). Now that all is sunny —
(Willi). Thank you, sir !
(Men). Kiss me quick, my honey !
(Lili). Then I will excuse you
(Schober). Thank you, dear !
(Tilli). I don’t want to lose you —
(Binder). Thank you, dear !
(Willi). Shall we dance together ?
(Braun). Thank you, dear !
(Girls). Then begin !
Valse sentimentale, D779/13
(DANCE)
(All). When skies are blue,
When pigeons coo,
That is the right time to woo !
For love’s aglow
When blossoms blow,
As ev’ry lover must know.

Deutscher D783/2
12 Lili, Schubert
Duet: The Flower song
(Lili). Dear flower, small and wise
Unveil to mortal eyes
What they will see
In the days that are to be !
I ask of you and wait
For you to tell my fate ;
Will the word that I guess Be No or Yes ?
For weal or woe, Say "Yes" or "No."

(Lili). Tell me, dear flower, the secret tell
Answer me now if he loves me well !
Whisper to me that hidden word,
The word desired and dear
I’ve longed to hear
But never heard !
Say if the dream of my heart comes true,
Longing that nobody knows but you ;
Tell me if soon
one day will shine
When I shall know
that all his heart is only mine !

(Schubert). Dear flower, in my turn
I hope my fate to learn ;
In hope and fear
I would find my fortune here !
The word for which I long,
The soul of all my song ;
Will you curse me or bless With No or Yes ?
For weal or woe, Say "Yes" or "No."

(Schubert) Tell me, dear flower, the secret tell
Answer me now if she loves me well !
Whisper to me that hidden word,
The word desired and dear
I’ve longed to hear
But never heard !
(Both) Say if the dream of my heart comes true,
Longing that nobody knows but you ;
Tell me if soon
one day will shine
When I shall know
that all {his | her} heart is only mine !

13 Mr & Mrs Veit
Duet: Girls and Boys
(Veit). Oh, we say it's a joy,
When it's a girl, or it's a boy !
There they will lie and they cry,
Never a word telling you why.
But time keeps on going,
And children keep on growing,
Until they are rather
Too much for Mother and Father !
Klavierstück D946/2
Oh yes, you'll see
What they will be,
Just as we used to, you know.
Dear little things,
They grow their wings,
Out they all go !
No matter where,
They do not care.
We're left with nobody there !
That's how it was, still it is so,
Mother, you know !
Walzer, D365/12
Yodel ??
(Mrs. Veit). Oh, the boys in their class.
Think how they'll run after a lass ;
Our little girls are as bad -
They will go wild over a lad !
And then you can't hold them,
They don't mind what you told them !
Someone or another
Will come and take them from Mother !
Klavierstück D946/2
Oh, yes, you'll see,
What they will be,
Just as we used to, you know !
Dear little things,
They grow their wings,
Out they all go !
No matter where,
They do not care,
We're left with nobody there !
That's how it was, still it is so,
Father, you know !
Walzer, D365/12
Yodel ??
14 Schubert, Schober, Hannerl
Finale:
(Schober). I want to carve your name on every tree,
On every stone that lies where you may see.
I want to plant in ev'ry garden plot
My love that blooms in blue forget-me-not!
To write in-all the buds that blow and sever
Yours is my heart, yours is my heart
And will be yours, and yours for ever !

I want to teach a starling all the song
My heart would sing to you the whole day long ;
To teach him till his voice can find the tone
To speak the words I say to you alone.
To sing before your window, ceasing never,
Yours is my heart, yours is my heart,
And will be yours, and yours for ever !
Ungeduld, D795/7
(Lili). How wonderful the song you sing,
It thrills my heart to tears and laughter.
It bears me on an angel's wing,
Into the world of joy hereafter !
(Schubert). Now speak to her, and speak for me.
Recitative: ??
(Lili). You sang, and all the night above me
Trembled as with love's desire ;
The stars were bending down to love me
All their eyes of golden fire !
Ah, sing again the words you told me,
For day and night your song would hold me !
(Schober). The song is like a magic spell;
It tells the passion of a lover.
Of one who loved you long,
Yes it is your lover's song !
(Lili). It sings of joy too deep to tell!
Then it is love, then it is love,
Yes, it is love, It is my lover's song !
Morgengruß, D795/8
(Schober). Yes, it is one who loved you long,
And thought you like a goddess, above him.
Now he has sung his love,
Can you love him ?
(Lili). And then ?
(Schober). And then ?
(Lili). And then ?
(Schober). And then ?
(Lili). Then I will answer him -
(Schober). What will you say ?
(Lili). I'll say -
Wanderer Fantasy D760, Presto
(Lili). Yours is my heart ! Yours is my heart ! Ungeduld, D795/7
(Schober). She loves me !- She loves me !
But it cannot be ! What am I to say to Schubert ?
(Schubert). You need not say anything, Franz.
I do not blame you.
It is my fortune, it is not your fault.
(Schober). Oh ! Franz ! I don't know how it happened.
I couldn't help it!
(Schubert). Happy man !
And no wonder, for who would look again at me ?
I will be wiser, far wiser now !
I'll go back to my music.
Love only comes to me in my music.
My song that won her love,
My love-song for another!
Recitative: ??
I want to carve your name on every tree,
On every stone that lies where you may see.
I want to plant in ev'ry garden plot
My love that blooms in blue forget-me-not!
To write in all the buds that blow and sever
Yours is my heart ! Yours is my heart !
Ungeduld, D795/7
3rd Act
15 Tilli, Willi, Binder, Braun, Vogl, Schwind, Kappel
Septet: Promenade Septet
(Tilli and Willi). Strolling through the morning air,
fresh and fair
What do we care ?
Over woodland, hill and plain,
Back again,
Through the Lovers' Lane !
(All). Oh, today is a joy beyond price !
(Men). Like Paradise!
(Girls). Isn't it nice ?
(All).
La-lirra-lay, la-lirra-lay,
Life is glad and gay!
La-lirra-lay, la-lirra-lay,
All the world at play !
(Vogl, Schwind and Kappel). If your partners you would change,
We can arrange.
You are married, so you can
Have any man !
(Tilli and Willi). That is most polite of you,
Kind and comme il faut !
Should we want a man or two
We will let you know.
(All). So, so {We will let you | you will let us} know.

16 Schubert
Solo: My Sweetest song of all
(Schubert). In my heart the whole day long
Once a song was ringing ;
All my passion pure and strong
To a maiden bringing.
Sighing, calling, clinging!
Then another sang my song,
Won her by his singing.
Heidenröslein, D257
Ah ! you that might have been my own,
And now are wooed and won,
My heart must dream of you alone
Until my days are done.
In other ways your heart will go
And hear another’s call.
You will not hear, you will not know
My sweetest song of all!

Once I had a love to tell,
Had my heart been bolder ;
Yet it seemed as though a spell
Hid me when I told her ;
Made my words sound colder.
Then another spoke so well,
He could win and hold her.
Heidenröslein, D257
Ah ! you that might have been my own,
And now are wooed and won,
My heart must dream of you alone
Until my days are done.
In other ways your heart will go
And hear another’s call.
You will not hear, you will not know
My sweetest song of all!

17 Lili, Schober
Duet: When the lilac bloom uncloses[1]
(Schober). When the lilac bloom uncloses
Is the time when love awakes;
It is now the time of roses,
And a rose is ours to take !
(Lili). For my love for you lay sleeping
In my maiden heart for long;
Bit I gave it to your keeping
When you won me with a song !
Wohin ?, D795/2
(Schober). And now sweet heart
Our ways will never part.
(Lili). Along the road unknown
We will not go alone -
(Schober). My own !

(Schober). Dearest, all is ours
Light and love and laughter,
Down our path of flow'rs,
Joy shall follow after !
Just like rose and vine,
Our two lives will twine.
Wedding bells will chime
The love of lilac time !
(Both). Just like rose and wine,
Our two lives will twine.
Wedding bells will chime
The love of lilac time !
Sonata in A minor, D537, 2nd movement.
(Lili). I had dreamed of fairy lovers
Who would give me magic bliss;
But today my heart discovers
There is nothing like your kiss !
(Schober). There were girls I thought might love me,
That is over long ago,
For your eyes that shine above me
Are the only stars I know.
Wohin ?, D795/2
(Lili). You will not care
For anyone more fair ?
(Schober). For no one can there be
As fair as what I see.
(Lili). In me !

(Schober). Dearest, all is ours
Light and love and laughter,
Down our path of flow'rs,
Joy shall follow after !
Just like rose and vine,
Our two lives will twine.
Wedding bells will chime
The love of lilac time !
(Both). Just like rose and wine,
Our two lives will twine.
Wedding bells will chime
The love of lilac time !
Sonata in A minor, D537, 2nd movement.
18 All
Finale:
(Schubert). I ask the Spring, blossom-laden,
To show me my maiden,
The love that I long for and look for to-day —
(All). And if she wears on her bosom
The fair lilac blossom,
{You'll | I'll} meet her and greet her
{Your | My} maid of the May !
D365/2, Trauerwalzer

Notes

[1] I have a copy of the Lilac Time vocal score, dated 1922, where this song has different words (the music is the same): Should a maiden weep for sorrow / When her sisters go away ? / You will be a bride tomorrow, / As the others are today ! ... . This appears to have been an earlier version, quickly changed: the 'original cast' recordings include a rendering of When the lilac bloom uncloses, and this also appears in later recordings. The only other significant difference between this vocal score and others that I have seen is that the presentation on the title page is 'Alfred Butt presents' instead of 'Chappel & Co. Ltd. present'.
