Schubert FilmographyIntroductionIMPORTANT NOTE !!! This filmography is in the process of being replaced by a new
point-and-click database driven site. This static page will shortly be
decomissioned. The new site is to be found

What one almost never finds in the online movie database is a listing of the orchestra or ensemble, or the names of the musical organization, the conductor, or solo performer. Copyright law (and very likely entertainment law) governs that this information appear in the film credits. This information is in the 'crawl' at the end of the movie, which only the hardiest of film buffs insists on sitting through. Unfortunately, the online sources for soundtracks -- especially those that have been newly released on a CD (or were re-mastered from old LPs in the case of earlier films) -- are usually limited to non-classical music, so here again the researcher will come up short in the quest for a Schubert citation. The only classical record label I know of that includes a separate list of its film soundtracks in its CD catalog is Naxos. There are specialty CD labels for movie soundtracks but they cover the broadest spectrum of musical genres and styles. The listing order is: film title; year released; country of origin (more than one if a co-production); other titles used; director's name; person(s) responsible for music or music direction; and, the bulleted Schubert work as provided in sources searched. There may appear a bracketed note about Schubert as a character in the film or about the authenticity of soundtrack and/or CD attribution. Online Sources: Movieline-Filmdatenbank (Germany); Internet Movie Data Base (USA); All Movie Guide (USA): La Bibliothèque du Film (France); Ministerio de Educacíon, Cultura y Deporte; Películas Españolas, y Extranjeras estrenadas en España (Spain); Classics from the Silver Screen - Classical Themes in Movies (USA); Soundtrack Collector (The Netherlands); and numerous film music sites, film soundtrack sites, and search engines. Print Reference Sources: Halliwell's 2002 Film and Video Guide, 17th edition; "Film," in Schubert Lexikon, ed. Ernst Hilmar and Margret Jestremski, pp 127-128. The following abbreviations are used: CD = soundtrack CD released; a/k/a = [title] also known as; d. = director; m. = music; md. = musical director; AA = Academy Award; AAN = Academy Award nomination. The question mark before the film title indicates that research has not been able to find a soundtrack association with Franz Schubert. The information used to generate these HTML pages is maintained in an access database, which is available to you from SIUK, (also available as an Excel spreadsheet) so you may do your own analyses.
